Girl who complains about gentrification excited for new vegan restaurant

DURHAM, NC–Recently, local activist Maya Thompson, who has bravely and openly criticized the gentrification in and around Durham, has continuously talked about how excited she is for a new vegan restaurant opening in town.

The previous restaurant, which employed many local residents and has been a long-time neighborhood favorite, was recently evicted for failing to pay rising rent costs. In its absence, landlord Dan James has made space for new restaurant Purely Nature, which will cater almost exclusively to upper-middle class Durham residents and Duke students. The menu is set to include many vegan variations of classic soul foods, including kale-infused grits and beignets made entirely from pre-digested soy powder.

Thompson explains that “yeah, gentrification sucks, but the plant-based menu sounds great.”

The servers, all of whom have Doc Martens, small flower tattoos, and only work to get their parents to stop nagging them, share Maya’s excitement about the restaurant’s opening.

Thompson is equally excited to move into one of the freshly empty homes in Durham’s East End.
